Introduction
Today, most of the world's sensitive data is protected by encryption that relies on problems classical computers find too hard to solve. Quantum computers will change that. Data intercepted today can be stored and decrypted later, so the threat is already real. ZeroThird, founded in Vienna, protects communication in a way that no computer, quantum or classical, can break.
How it works?
ZeroThird builds quantum key distribution (QKD) systems. Instead of relying on mathematical complexity, QKD uses the laws of physics: the encryption keys are carried by individual particles of light, and any attempt to intercept them disturbs those particles and is immediately detected. The result is key exchange whose security is guaranteed by physics rather than computing power.
Why we funded?
Protecting critical communication against quantum threats is becoming an urgent priority for governments, defence and critical infrastructure, and Europe needs its own technology to do it. ZeroThird combines world-class scientific depth with a product-focused team and strong co-investors. We see it as one of the most important security technologies of the coming decade, and one of the strongest companies in the OVC portfolio.
